I appropriated my parents' silent Super-8 film camera in the late 1970s, while in high school, and made a few self-consciously experimental films that I would project to the accompaniment of self-made soundtracks on audio cassette. I continued this method of filmmaking through college, until the late 1980s, when I purchased a cumbersome, two-piece Mitsubishi VHS camera. I've since worked with VHS-C and currently mini-DV, while the Super-8 and a manual 16-millimeter cameras languish in my closet. The most primitive early editing was done using two VCRs until my recent transition to digital video.
